WPM here uses the standard definition: five correct characters count as one word. That is why a test on common English words gives a higher number than one on random strings, and why "raw" speed, which counts everything you typed with the mistakes included, is always the larger figure.
Around 40 wpm is average for an adult touch typist, 60–70 is fast, and above 100 is competitive. Accuracy matters more than speed for real work: correcting errors costs more time than typing slowly saves.

Questions
How is WPM calculated?
Correct characters divided by five, divided by minutes elapsed. The five-character convention comes from typewriter-era standards and is what every typing test uses, so the numbers are comparable.
Should I fix my mistakes?
Yes. Uncorrected characters count against both accuracy and net WPM. Backspacing costs time but recovers the score.
Why is my score lower here than elsewhere?
Different tests use different word lists. Common-word lists produce higher scores than tests with punctuation, capitals or code. Compare yourself against your own past runs, not across sites.
