What do the small numbers mean?

The word's Scrabble score, adding up the standard tile values. It ignores board bonuses like double-word squares, which depend on where you play.

Why are some words highlighted?

Those use every letter you entered: a full anagram rather than a shorter word made from part of your rack.

Does it work offline?

Yes. The dictionary is compressed inside the page itself, so once it has loaded there is nothing left to fetch.

Are these words valid in Scrabble?

Not necessarily, and this matters if you are settling an argument. Tournament play uses a specific list: TWL in North America, Collins almost everywhere else, and Collins is substantially larger. Both are copyrighted and cannot be redistributed in a page like this one, so it searches SCOWL, a general English word list. It will offer words no official list includes and occasionally miss one that is legal. For a real game, the dictionary your game ships with is the authority.

How do I search with a blank tile?

Type ? where the blank goes. Each one stands for any single letter, so pla?et finds the six-letter words matching that shape, and you can use more than one, though each extra blank widens the search a great deal and the list gets long. Blanks score nothing, which is worth remembering before you spend one on a one-point letter.

Why is a word I definitely know missing?

SCOWL is split into size bands, and this page uses one that leaves out the rarest entries, along with proper nouns, abbreviations and most hyphenated forms. Very obscure or very new words fall outside it. That is the trade for a word list small enough to compile into a page that loads in a second.

What is the difference between an anagram and an unscramble?

An anagram uses every letter exactly once. Unscrambling looks for any word that can be built from some of the letters you hold, which is what you actually need mid-game when you have seven tiles and space for four. Filter by length if you only want the full-length anagrams.

One hundred tiles in the English set, and the values are inversely proportional to how often Alfred Butts found each letter while counting front pages of the New York Times in the 1930s. That is the whole design: common letters are cheap, and the scoring has barely changed since.

The high-value letters are a trap. Holding Q or Z for a big play usually costs more in dead turns than the tiles are worth, and the players who win consistently are the ones managing their vowel balance rather than hunting for a 40-point word.
