Five paragraphs is roughly two hundred words, which is the length at which a page stops being a mockup and starts being a page. It fills a screen on a laptop and scrolls on a phone, so it is the amount that shows you what your layout does at the fold and just past it.

It is also the point where the things that go wrong start to show. A line height that looked fine over three paragraphs reads as cramped over five. A measure set too wide is tiring by the fourth. Neither is visible in a single block of text, which is why filling the whole flow matters more than getting the font right first.

What is lorem ipsum?

Latin-looking placeholder text, scrambled from Cicero's De finibus of 45 BC and used by typesetters since the 1500s. The point of nonsense is that it cannot be read: real copy in a mockup pulls a reviewer into what it says instead of how the page looks, and English placeholder is worse still because it half-reads.
