Fifty words exactly, which is roughly three hundred and twenty
        characters. It is the size of a card, a tooltip that has outgrown a line, a
        summary field or the excerpt a listing page pulls from an article.

        
Short placeholder is where truncation bugs live. A component that looks right at
        fifty words may clip at sixty and collapse at ten, so it is worth generating a few
        lengths around whatever the real copy will be rather than trusting one. Change the
        number and the text updates as you type.

Questions


How many characters are fifty words?
About three hundred and twenty with spaces, though it varies with the words drawn. The exact figure for the text on screen sits beside the output. Check it rather than the estimate when you are testing against a character limit, because the two can differ by a good deal.


What is a good length for testing truncation?
Several, not one. Generate the length the real copy will be, then something clearly shorter and something clearly longer, because a component that handles fifty words often clips at sixty or falls apart at five. Changing the number here regenerates immediately, so trying three lengths takes seconds.


What is lorem ipsum?
Latin-looking placeholder text, scrambled from Cicero's De finibus of 45 BC and used by typesetters since the 1500s. The point of nonsense is that it cannot be read: real copy in a mockup pulls a reviewer into what it says instead of how the page looks, and English placeholder is worse still because it half-reads.


Is the text sent anywhere?
No. It is generated in this tab by WebAssembly compiled from Rust, so nothing about what you asked for leaves the device and the page keeps working with the network off. There is no account and nothing is stored.
