Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin taken from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, used by printers since the 1500s to fill a layout with text-shaped text. The point of it is that it cannot be read: a reviewer given real sentences starts editing the copy, and a reviewer given nonsense looks at the typography, the spacing and the line length, which is what the draft was for.

Choose paragraphs, sentences or words, and how many. The generator here is deterministic from a seed, so the same settings give the same text every time, which is more useful than it sounds: a screenshot taken today matches the one taken last week, and a diff of two design files does not fill up with placeholder churn.

Two things worth knowing. Latin has a different letter distribution and a different average word length from English, so a paragraph of lorem ipsum is not the same width as the paragraph that replaces it, and a layout that only just fits will not. And never let it reach a published page: search engines index it, it looks unfinished to anyone who arrives, and "lorem ipsum" is a search anyone can run against your own site.

Questions

Should I use lorem ipsum in a real design review?

For layout and typography, yes. For anything where the copy affects the design (buttons, headlines, error messages) use realistic text instead, or you will ship a layout that breaks on the first real sentence.

Why not use real text as a placeholder?

Because people read it. Real sentences in a draft pull a review towards the words and away from the design, and worse, they sometimes ship: placeholder copy written as a joke has ended up on live sites more than once.

Does lorem ipsum hurt SEO?

Only if it is published. A page of placeholder Latin has nothing anyone searched for, and a site with several of them looks unfinished to a crawler. In a draft, in a design file or in a test fixture it costs nothing at all.

Why does the same setting give the same text?

Because the generator is seeded rather than random. That keeps a mockup stable between exports, so a diff shows what you changed rather than what the placeholder did, and a screenshot can be retaken without the text moving.

Is it really Latin?

It is real Latin words, jumbled into something that is not real Latin. The source passage is a discussion of pleasure and pain from a treatise Cicero wrote in 45 BC; the version everyone uses has been cut and shuffled so thoroughly that it no longer means anything.
